The automorphism tower problem revisited
by Just and Shelah and Thomas. [JShT:654]
Advances in Math, 1999
It is known that the automorphism towers of infinite
centreless groups of cardinality kappa terminate in less than
(2^{kappa})^{+} steps. In this paper, we show
that ZFC cannot settle the question of whether such
automorphism towers actually terminate in less than 2^{kappa}
steps.
